Lab-grown moon rock experiment reveals how solar wind reshapes lunar surface

Researchers have recreated the effects of solar wind on lunar minerals in a laboratory experiment, providing new evidence that the constant stream of charged particles from the sun plays a major role in shaping the moon’s surface.
The team exposed ilmenite to a synthetic version of solar wind, producing nanophase iron which is widely found in lunar soil and considered a key signature of space weathering. 
The findings could help better interpret remote sensing data used to estimate the age and composition of the moon’s surface.
