Iranian state media has rejected US claims over a recent military encounter in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that American forces struck civilian vessels rather than military targets. The incident has further escalated tensions between Iran and the United States amid competing narratives over maritime security in the region, reported ANI.
Iran claims civilian boats targeted in strike
According to Iranian state media reports, the vessels hit during the operation were not linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as claimed by Washington. Instead, authorities in Tehran said the boats were civilian craft transporting passengers and goods along regional routes. The vessels were reportedly travelling from Khasab towards the Iranian coastline when they were fired upon, reported ANI.
Five civilians killed, probe launched
Iranian officials stated that the strike resulted in the deaths of five civilians. A military official, speaking to Tasnim News Agency, said an internal investigation had been initiated following US claims about the encounter. The probe concluded that two small cargo boats carrying civilians were targeted, contradicting the US version of events, reported ANI.
Tehran criticises US action as ‘overreaction’
The same official described the American response as “hasty and clumsy,” attributing it to what he called excessive fear of IRGC naval operations. Iranian authorities argued that the strike reflects heightened tensions and miscalculations in a region already marked by military build-up and strategic rivalry, reported ANI.
US says operation aimed at protecting shipping lanes
In contrast, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) defended the action, stating that its forces targeted “Iranian small boats” that were threatening commercial shipping. According to US officials, Sea Hawk and Apache helicopters were deployed to neutralise the perceived threat as part of efforts to secure maritime routes, reported ANI.
Strategic tensions rise in key global trade corridor
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy and trade chokepoints, making any military activity in the area highly sensitive. The US has framed its operations as part of a broader mission to ensure uninterrupted global trade and maintain freedom of navigation. The initiative, linked to directives from US President Donald Trump, aims to reassure commercial shipping amid rising instability.
Conflicting narratives deepen geopolitical divide
The sharply differing accounts from Tehran and Washington underscore the fragile security situation in the region. While Iran accuses the US of targeting civilians, American authorities maintain that the action was defensive and necessary. With both sides standing by their versions, the incident is likely to intensify diplomatic tensions and raise concerns over the risk of further escalation in the strategically vital waterway.
