Trump says he wants Russia-Ukraine war to be `10th conflict` he helped end

US President Donald Trump on Friday said he hopes the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war could become the next major global conflict resolved during his presidency, claiming that he has already helped settle nine wars since returning to the White House.
Speaking to reporters before departing for a dinner event at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia, Trump said he would “love to” see the Russia-Ukraine conflict come to an end and suggested that diplomatic efforts were moving in a positive direction.
“I would love to see that war end. I have settled eight wars and actually nine, and it looks like we could have ten, but I would love to make that the tenth,” Trump told reporters while referring to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump Announces Three-Day Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire
Earlier, Trump announced a temporary three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from May 9 to May 11. According to the US President, the brief truce coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations commemorating the Soviet Union’s role during World War II.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire would involve a halt to “all kinetic activity” between both countries during the three-day period.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump stated, adding that both countries had agreed to the temporary arrangement following discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump further told reporters that he personally requested the ceasefire extension and said both leaders had “readily agreed” to pause military action temporarily.
Trump Pushes For Longer Suspension Of Hostilities
The US President also expressed support for extending the ceasefire beyond the initial three-day period. He said he hoped the temporary halt in fighting could eventually pave the way for a permanent peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.
“Yes, I would like to see a big extension,” Trump said while responding to questions about whether the ceasefire could continue beyond May 11.
Trump described the Russia-Ukraine war as one of the deadliest global conflicts since World War II and claimed that thousands of soldiers were being killed every month. However, he did not provide evidence to support the casualty figures mentioned during his remarks.
Prisoner Exchange Planned During Ceasefire Period
According to Trump’s statement, the ceasefire agreement also includes a planned prisoner exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side. He said the arrangement was part of broader diplomatic discussions currently underway to permanently end the war.
“This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” Trump stated in his social media post.
The Russia-Ukraine war entered its fifth year in February 2026 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Despite several rounds of international diplomatic efforts and sanctions, the conflict has continued with periodic escalations across multiple regions.
Trump Says Talks To End War Are Progressing
Trump also claimed that negotiations aimed at ending the war permanently are making progress. He described the conflict as the “biggest” global crisis since World War II and expressed optimism that ongoing talks could eventually lead to a lasting settlement.
“Talks are continuing on ending this major conflict, and we are getting closer and closer every day,” Trump said.
The latest remarks come amid continued international focus on diplomatic efforts to end the prolonged conflict, which has resulted in heavy military and civilian casualties, large-scale displacement, and global economic disruptions since 2022.
