US President Donald Trump has announced that his postponed meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping will now take place in Beijing on May 14-15. The White House described the summit as a “long-awaited” event signalling renewed top-level engagement between the two global powers, reported the IANS.
Trump, in a social media post, called the upcoming engagement a “Monumental Event” and expressed eagerness to meet President Xi in person.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that First Lady Melania Trump will accompany the President, and that President Xi and his wife, Madame Peng, are expected to visit Washington, DC, later this year, according to the IANS.
Preparations for both visits are reportedly underway, with logistics and security planning already in progress.
Again, we`ve estimated a four-to-six-week window. President looks forward to that visit. There were no “pre-conditions” regarding the conclusion of the war; President Xi simply understood that it was important for the President to be here during these operations,” the press secretary added.
Timing amid Iran war
The summit had been postponed earlier due to ongoing US military operations in Iran. Officials stressed that the meeting in Beijing is not contingent on the conclusion of the conflict, although the White House noted that military objectives in Iran are progressing, with operations expected to take four to six weeks.
Earlier on March 17, amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East, China said on Tuesday that United States President Donald Trump`s impending visit to the country has nothing to do with the Strait of Hormuz closure. China`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson`s Office said that both sides remain in talks regarding the dates of the visit.
Strategic and diplomatic significance
The planned summit comes amid complex US-China relations, involving trade disputes, technology restrictions, and security competition. Leadership-level meetings such as this are considered critical to stabilising bilateral ties and signalling intent to the global community, as per the IANS.
Observers in the Indo-Pacific region, including India, are watching the engagement closely, given its implications for regional security, economic flows, and the broader balance of power.
Leadership dialogue amid rivalry
Despite ongoing tensions, both Washington and Beijing have maintained channels for dialogue at the highest level. This visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both leaders to discuss key issues, from economic relations to strategic competition, and to potentially ease global uncertainties, the news agency reported.
